Massage is for Every Body
Breaking the Stigma Around Body Image and Massage
Massage therapy should be for everyone—but unfortunately, many people feel like they don't belong on a massage table. Whether it’s concerns about weight, scars, body hair, mobility challenges, or just feeling self-conscious in general, we hear all sorts of reasons why people hesitate to get a massage.
Let’s set the record straight: Massage is for every body. Not just certain body types. Not just young, fit, or "perfect" bodies (which, by the way, don’t actually exist). It’s for real people—just like you.
Your Therapist is Not Judging You
One of the most common worries people have before booking a massage is, What if my therapist is judging me? Here’s the honest answer: We’re not. Massage therapists see bodies of all shapes, sizes, and conditions every single day. Our job is to help you feel better—not to critique or compare.
We notice things like muscle tension, range of motion, and how your body responds to pressure—not whether you shaved your legs, if your toenails are painted, or if you have a little extra weight. (Spoiler alert: We don’t care. At all.)
Common Concerns We Hear (And Why They Shouldn’t Hold You Back)
“I’m too overweight for a massage.”
No, you’re not. Your body deserves care and relief just as much as anyone else’s. Massage is meant to help your muscles, joints, and overall well-being—regardless of size. We have sturdy tables, and we’re trained to work with all body types.
“I have scars/stretch marks, and I’m self-conscious.”
Scars and stretch marks are signs that your body has been through things and healed. They’re completely normal, and they do not affect your massage in any way. Therapists don’t give them a second thought, and neither should you.
“I didn’t shave. Will that be weird?”
Not at all. We work with athletes, people who prefer not to shave, and plenty of folks who just didn’t have time that morning. Body hair is natural. It makes zero difference in how we do our job.
“I have a disability or mobility challenges.”
Massage therapy can be incredibly beneficial for people with disabilities, chronic pain, or mobility issues. If you have specific needs, just let us know—we’ll adjust positioning, techniques, and anything else necessary to make you comfortable.
“I’m a man, and I’ve never had a massage before. Will it be awkward?”
Not at all! Many men have never had a professional massage before, and we get it—there’s a lot of stigma around men and self-care. But massage is for everyone, and if you’re sore, stressed, or just curious about how it could help, we welcome you with open arms (and skilled hands).
You Deserve to Feel Good in Your Own Body
If you’ve ever hesitated to book a massage because of body image concerns, we want you to know this: You deserve to feel good. Your body—exactly as it is—deserves care, relaxation, and relief from pain. Massage therapy isn’t about looking a certain way. It’s about feeling better, moving better, and reducing stress.
At Stress Less Massage, we are committed to creating a judgment-free, welcoming space for everyone. Your body is worth taking care of, no exceptions.
